In the United States, from January 1, 2017 to November 5, 2017, there have been 307 mass shootings in which. four or more people were injured or killed according to the Gun Violence Archive. These mass shootings are much too frequent to ignore. With these statistics alone, we can infer that 7 mass shootings occur in only a week. So why does this keep happening?

One of the main reasons is the lack of tighter gun control laws. In most states, you can legally buy a gun from an unlicensed dealer (usually a private collector) at a gun show, as long as the sale is made between two people in the same state. One of the reasons a lot of gun control laws are not passed is because of the National Rifle Association (NRA). The National Rifle Association of America is an American nonprofit organization that advocates for gun rights.

The NRA spends millions of dollars lobbying for republican politicians, paying large sums of money to them to prevent tighter gun control laws, and repeal existing laws. The most important reason that these laws are not being passed is the common belief that it is only important to focus on the people who use these weapons, instead of focusing on the way these mentally ill people gained these weapons.
