Did you feel that? No, well most people who live in the City of Napa woke up to a startling sounds last weekend – stuff falling off of shelves, windows breaking, or even televisions falling.

Those noises were happening because at about 3:20 in the morning there was a 6.0 magnitude earthquake on Sunday the 24th of August. This quake jolted many residents who were sleeping out of their beds. It was centered about six miles south of the City of Napa.

A few people were seriously injured. Some fires also broke out because of gas leaks caused by the quake. Some residents say that it was strong enough to be felt throughout the Bay Area. Besides the problems with gas and power lines, there were many broken windows and damaged buildings.

This quake was the largest to hit the bay area since the Loma Prieta Earthquake in 1989, which killed 63 people. Some residents say that this  quake lasted about 20 seconds .

Napa Valley Unified School District reported that 19 elementary schools were closed, five middle schools were closed, and also five high schools here in Napa. Some damage was reported at a few schools after the earthquake.
