Many buildings in downtown Napa suffered dropped brick and stone to the streets below during the quake.

When scientists talk about “The Big One” they refer to it as an earthquake that can be as big as an 8.0 or higher in the California Region.

The last big earthquake that happened here was in 1989 and was know as the Loma Prieta Earthquake. That occurred in Northern California on October 17 at 5:04  p.m.

The 1989 World Series between the Giants and the A’s was about to start when it hit. The earthquake measured a 6.9, which is much smaller than an 8.0, and there were many deaths and injuries. The Napa earthquake was only a 6.0, which is very small compared to Loma Prieta.

The chances of an 8.0 earthquake in California are great according to scientists, and they can’t predict when it might happen. So it is very important to be as prepared as possible.
